WOMEN IN ART HISTORY I

DE     Sibylle Zehs RECLAMS KÜNSTLERINNENLEXIKON 2000-2008 umfasst mittlerweile drei Bände. Zeh benutzte dafür drei unterschiedliche Ausgaben des Reclam-Künstlerlexikons: eine aus dem Jahr 1979, dem Jahr 1995 und eine von 2002. Mit weißer Farbe wurden alle Biografien von Künstlern übermalt, während die Biografien von Künstlerinnen lesbar blieben. Die vielen weißen Blätter sind entlarvend und es ist bezeichnend, wie viele Seiten überblättert werden müssen, bis wieder ein lesbarer Text – die Biografie einer Künstlerin – erscheint. Zeh stellt damit auf eindringliche Weise den geringen Anteil von Künstlerinnen in der Kunstgeschichtsschreibung dar und veranschaulicht die Frage, wer wann in ein Künstlerlexikon aufgenommen wird

EN     Sibylle Zeh’s RECLAMS KÜNSTLERINNENLEXIKON 2000-2008 comprises now three volumes. The artist used three different editions of the artist lexicon published by Reclam – one from 1979, the year 1995, and one from 2002. With white paint all biographies of male artists are painted over, while the biographies of female artists remained legible. The many white sheets are revealing, and it is telling how many pages have to be leafed through until legible text – the biography of a female artists – appears. Zeh thus vividly shows the low percentage of female  artists in the artistic canon, examining the question of who is included in a art historiography and illustrates the question of who is included in an encyclopedia of artists, and when.
